Computational fluid dynamics simulations to improve performance characteristics of a manifold having a central inlet and outlet

In the present work, performance/flow characteristics (namely, effect of operating parameters like pressure on flow patterns, drop, and extent uniformity) transport phenomena a manifold (header tube assembly) having an inlet outlet at center are carried out macroscale geometry using CFD simulations. this study, existing design available in published literature (with high non-uniformity) was considered optimized minimum developed. The optimization is performed by incorporating perforated plate (distributor) inside top header manifold. First, simulations for different configurations with have been 10 bar steam as working fluid, configuration non-uniformity less than 3% obtained. both then range (10 ≤ p 70 bar) corresponding Reynolds number (Re) (2.82E+05 Re 2.82E+06) fluid. (ENU) drop (without distributor) analyzed compared. gives near uniform (∼1–4%) all pressures numbers considered. An empirical correlation relating friction factor (as per Chilton–Colburn analogy) has developed designs without distributor). predicted factors compared predictions, experimental data shell heat exchanger literature. A good agreement within 10–15% deviation observed. Based analogy, Nusselt obtained from correlations distributor cases. were found to be valid under any conditions 0.05 < ∆ 1.8 irrespective distributor, assuming that able withstand drops given range.
